2024 Blue Water Vagabond Surf Festival
Thank you so much for your support at our 2024 Opening Party!
Important Surf Festival Update
Over the last few weeks, we have been checking the wave potential and sandbar development at Ho Hum. While we have been optimistic about holding the surf festival we are also realistic about the challenges.
The shifts in sandbars at Ho Hum have impacted the wave quality and consistency.
The waves have made the call: We will be postponing the Surf Festival until next year.
While we are saddened by this decision, the safety and enjoyment of our participants are our top priorities. With the current beach conditions, we cannot ensure the level of performance or excitement that makes our Surf Festival such a spectacular end-of-summer event for participants and supporters alike.
We are going to continue to keep an eye on the beach and hope that the sandbars shift over the winter season, bringing back that wave that we can all enjoy.
The Fire Place Initiative remains committed to delivering high-quality recreational culture that promotes community-organized conservation and access.
Meanwhile, stay tuned for a Fire Place Initiative Film event coming soon!
Blue Water Vagabond Surf Festival Origins
The festival is organized by the Fire Place Initiative, a non-profit 501c3. We are a team of passionate volunteers who are committed to making a positive impact in our community. The festival name is taken from a book by local Brookhaven, NY environmentalist and author, Dennis Puleston.
We also host the Osprey Open, a fun tennis competition that brings people of all ages and skill levels together. Both events are designed to highlight the strong community spirit and raise money to support community engagement activities. These activities and events are focused on connecting under-resourced parts of our community with nature.
